Insecurity

Is it just me, or is the sight of a portly security guard in a reflective vest strolling across the Anzac Bridge an exercise in futility?

Any number of frightening scenarios can be conjured up by the informed citizen. So, why are are we wasting valuable (and scarce) public money paying private security companies to walk backwards and forwards across city bridges?

I'm not saying our major landmarks should not be protected, but let's be realistic. Token measures are not the way to go. Infrastructure and icons like the Opera House need to be monitored and protected, but if I can come up with a scenario as I sit in my lounge room laughing at the evening news footage of that earlier mentioned security guard - why can't "they"?

it's not just you !

i find the australian prime ministers' advice to the australian public regarding the threat of "terrorism" priceless:

"be alert ... not alarmed".

uh huh. aka be aware that your country may be blown sky high at any moment as a result of our international incompetence and "head in the sand" mentality ... but don't worry about it ...we've put a guy in a vest on the anzac bridge ... THAT'll scare 'em.

i'm sooo proud to be australian right now

great point, pixter. thanks.

Yes, Little Johnny just fills me with confidence. This is a Prime Minister who felt the best way to make Australians feel safe was to give them each a fridge magnet. At least my Vegemite will be safe!
